A full-featured framework that empowers you to easily build [Telegram bots](https://telegram.org/blog/bot-revolution) using [Rust](https://www.rust-lang.org/). It handles all the difficult stuff so you can focus only on your business logic.

## Highlights
2020-04-17 10:31:10 +02:00
2022-10-07 12:34:42 +02:00
- **Declarative design.** `teloxide` is based upon [`dptree`], a functional [chain of responsibility] pattern that allows you to express pipelines of message processing in a highly declarative and extensible style.
2020-07-04 15:45:19 +02:00

2020-07-04 15:45:19 +02:00
- **Feature-rich.** You can use both long polling and webhooks, configure an underlying HTTPS client, set a custom URL of a Telegram API server, and much more.
- **Simple dialogues.** Our dialogues subsystem is simple and easy-to-use, and, furthermore, is agnostic of how/where dialogues are stored. For example, you can just replace a one line to achieve [persistence]. Out-of-the-box storages include [Redis] and [Sqlite].

2020-04-17 10:31:10 +02:00
2022-10-07 06:45:35 +02:00
- **Strongly typed commands.** Define bot commands as an `enum` and teloxide will parse them automatically — just like JSON structures in [`serde-json`] and command-line arguments in [`structopt`].

## Setting up your environment
2022-02-04 04:47:15 +01:00
2020-05-26 13:03:24 +02:00
1. [Download Rust](http://rustup.rs/).
2. Create a new bot using [@Botfather](https://t.me/botfather) to get a token in the format `123456789:blablabla`.
3. Initialise the `TELOXIDE_TOKEN` environmental variable to your token:
2020-02-12 11:47:51 +01:00
```bash
2020-05-25 22:53:12 +02:00
# Unix-like
$ export TELOXIDE_TOKEN=<Your token here>
2020-02-14 11:28:35 +01:00
2021-08-25 20:48:08 +02:00
# Windows command line
$ set TELOXIDE_TOKEN=<Your token here>
2021-08-25 20:48:08 +02:00
# Windows PowerShell
$ $env:TELOXIDE_TOKEN=<Your token here>
2020-02-12 11:47:51 +01:00
```
2022-10-07 13:23:52 +02:00
2022-10-09 18:59:52 +02:00
4. Make sure that your Rust compiler is up to date (`teloxide` currently requires rustc at least version 1.64):
2020-02-12 11:09:53 +01:00
```bash
2020-02-24 22:35:15 +01:00
# If you're using stable
2020-02-12 11:09:53 +01:00
$ rustup update stable
2020-02-24 22:35:15 +01:00
$ rustup override set stable
# If you're using nightly
$ rustup update nightly
$ rustup override set nightly
2020-01-26 22:36:36 +01:00
```
2020-02-12 11:09:53 +01:00
2020-10-08 05:46:30 +02:00
5. Run `cargo new my_bot`, enter the directory and put these lines into your `Cargo.toml`:
2020-01-26 22:36:36 +01:00
```toml
2020-02-12 11:09:53 +01:00
[dependencies]
2022-10-07 12:55:57 +02:00
teloxide = { version = "0.11", features = ["macros", "auto-send"] }
2021-09-11 20:30:34 +02:00
log = "0.4"
2022-03-22 06:40:53 +01:00
pretty_env_logger = "0.4"
2021-09-11 20:30:34 +02:00
tokio = { version = "1.8", features = ["rt-multi-thread", "macros"] }
2020-01-26 22:36:36 +01:00
```
2020-05-26 13:03:24 +02:00

### The dices bot
2022-02-04 04:40:15 +01:00
2022-10-09 18:42:20 +02:00
This bot replies with a die throw to each received message:

### Commands
2022-02-04 04:40:15 +01:00
2020-07-25 15:40:58 +02:00
Commands are strongly typed and defined declaratively, similar to how we define CLI using [structopt] and JSON structures in [serde-json]. The following bot accepts these commands:
- `/username <your username>`
- `/usernameandage <your username> <your age>`
- `/help`

### Dialogues management
2020-02-13 21:19:08 +01:00
2022-02-23 19:13:24 +01:00
A dialogue is typically described by an enumeration where each variant is one possible state of the dialogue. There are also _state handler functions_, which may turn a dialogue from one state to another, thereby forming an [FSM].

Below is a bot that asks you three questions and then sends the answers back to you:

## FAQ
2020-07-28 20:43:09 +02:00
2022-02-04 04:47:15 +01:00
**Q: Where I can ask questions?**
2020-07-28 20:43:09 +02:00
2022-02-04 14:40:39 +01:00
A:
- [Issues] is a good place for well-formed questions about the library design, enhancements, and bug reports.
- [GitHub Discussions] is a place where you can ask us for help in a less formal manner.
- If you need quick help in real-time, you should ask a question in [our official Telegram group].

2020-11-01 12:45:59 +01:00
**Q: Do you support the Telegram API for clients?**
A: No, only the bots API.
2020-11-01 12:45:59 +01:00
**Q: Can I use webhooks?**
2020-06-26 14:35:43 +02:00
2022-10-07 12:34:42 +02:00
A: You can! `teloxide` has a built-in support for webhooks in `dispatching::update_listeners::webhooks` module. See how it's used in [`examples/ngrok_ping_pong_bot`](examples/ngrok_ping_pong.rs) and [`examples/heroku_ping_pong_bot`](examples/heroku_ping_pong.rs).
2022-04-22 19:50:19 +02:00
**Q: Can I handle both callback queries and messages within a single dialogue?**
A: Yes, see [`examples/purchase.rs`](examples/purchase.rs).
